Quick quiz – What’s the number one cause of death in children ages 1-12? You’re right – car crashes. How can we as parents keep our children in this age group as safe as possible? Your right again – car seats.
The Illinois Child Passenger Protection Act states that any person transporting a child under the age of 8 years is responsible for securing that child in an appropriate child restraint system, more commonly called a child safety seat. Recommendations include keeping children rear-facing as long as possible and keeping children in the back seat at least through age 12. Do not use a safety seat more than 6 years old or past the expiration date stamped on the seat.
Unsure if your seat is installed properly? Don’t guess! There are many free car seat inspection certified technicians in our area. They are easy to find! Go to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website, nhtsa.gov, type “Car Seat Inspection Station Near You” in the search bar.
